The group formed in July 2015 in response to the refugee crisis and concern that despite so much public concern, very little seemed to be happening to help relieve the suffering.
The group now has 30+ members who meet on the 3rd Friday of each month at 10.00am at St. Olaf’s Church hall, Poughill, Bude, EX23 9EP.
We have monthly collections of much needed clothes, food, medical & hygiene products which are taken for sorting in Wadebridge and onward for refugees abroad.
We have many ideas such as starting a letter writing scheme between school children in Bude & children in refugee camps in the Middle East, respite holidays for children in city areas who would not otherwise have a break.
Our main objective is to help 2 refugee families rebuild their lives here in Bude and help them to learn English, find employment and integrate into this wonderful town of ours.
We are one of the vanguard groups applying to the Government under their Full Community Sponsorship scheme. We have calculated that this will cost a minimum of £15,000 a family as we top up their rent, pay for interpreters, provided English lessons and all they need to become independent, integrated members of our society.
In order to become a sponsoring group we needed to gain charitable status which we achieved on 4th January 2017. This has the added bonus that donations can be gift aided.
